Transforming Lives

HeartStart was developed to screen first responders who have not been able to participate in Sigma’s on-site cardiac screening program. Standard risk-based cardiovascular screening is ineffective in detecting heart disease in law enforcement as it has been proven to miss over 90% of police officers who are at increased risk for heart disease.

Through our screening of over 14,000 law enforcement officers and first responders and other published research, the following statistics show the importance of cardiac screening for all ages of first responders:

24% of our officers who tested positive for pre-clinical heart disease were less than 40 years old¹

92% of the officers tested in our program are shown to have early onset heart disease¹

46 is the average age of a Heart Attack for Officers (65 for Civilians)²
